Taiwanese publication Daily Apple (via Apple Insider) claims to have tracked down a genuine iPad 3 casing, which appears to show a larger lens than the often criticised 2-megapixel camera in the iPad 2.
The report speculates that the tablet will have an 8-megapixel camera similar to the iPhone 4S, capable of shooting 1080p videos. It also says that the slightly tapered edges of the tablet casing would appear to accommodate a larger battery.
The addition of a better rear-facing camera would help the iPad keep ahead of the many Android tablets, including the Samsung Galaxy 10.1.
According to widespread reports, the iPad 3 is expected to come with wireless 4G LTE connectivity and feature a proprietary A6 processor.
MacRumours also claims to have obtained a casing for the third iteration of the iPad from a source within Apple's production chain.
The casing shows that the iPad 3 will have the same 9.7-inch form factor as previous incarnations, but with the much speculated Retina super high resolution display.
In its report, MacRumours says: "When comparing the iPad 3 display to one from an iPad 2 under a microscope, the difference in resolutions becomes readily apparent, with the iPad 3 display's pixels appearing to be one-quarter the size of those on the iPad 2."
It adds: "Extrapolating out, the iPad 3 screen should carry a full resolution of 2048x1536, exactly twice the linear resolution of the iPad 1 and iPad 2 which is 1024x768. Such a screen should be able to display much sharper images as compared to the previous generation iPads."
Apple is expected to officially announce the iPad 3 on March 7, with the product likely to go on sale two weeks later
